A place unspoiled by tourism is a wonderful thing. It also means, however, that very few people in the area speak English.
Fortunately the Italians are very understanding and helpful – but a travel dictionary or other means of help is very useful. In smaller restaurants they don’t even have a menu – they simply read the menu for you at the table.

In case of an accident the hospital in Udine has a very modern and functional emergency room.

Since 2001 the Italians have banned all cigarette smoking in public buildings, shops, restaurants and bars. Most places have outdoor serving where smoking is allowed.

In Italy all shops, restaurants and stores must, according to the law, close down 2 days a week. The choice of day is free. However, most shops are closed Sundays and Mondays.
Shops also have a kind of “siesta”. They close for a few hours in the middle of the day.
Typically form 12 or 12:30 to about 3 or 3.30 pm. The bigger supermarkets stay open all day.
Restaurants are normally not open for dinner before 7 pm.
