Food and wine

For some of us, the local food and wine is one of the main reasons for travelling to Friuli .

We are situated in the middle of the wine district Ramandolo DOCG, and the possibilities for visiting vineyards and wine tasting are endless.
Winemaking here is a passion – if a person here owns just 100sq meters of soil, you can be sure that he is growing grapes.
The wine produced in this area is unique in many ways.
For one it is “cleaner” and healthy than most, because they add less sulphur, use no fertilizers and the wines are high in antioxidants.
We also think that the wines simply tastes better here.
One reason is that the production is substantially smaller, compared to the larger more well known districts in north Italy .
The most well known of the Friuli wines, is the sweet, amber coloured “Ramandolo” – look out for the luxury version: “Ramandolo-Passito”, made on dried grapes.

The Italian kitchen needs no introduction. The Friuli kitchen benefits from the traditional virtues of simple country cooking. The dishes are made with few, but wholesome and most often locally grown ingredients.
If you can grow and be self sufficient with 90% of all raw materials (food and wine), then you are allowed to open, what is called an “Agriturismo” -Restaurant. The word does not relate to tourists, but to the fact that they produce most of what they serve.

Coming soon: a review of our top ten favourite restaurants in the area. We are finding this task to be quite a mouthful and slightly problematic, but for all the right reasons.
